Measurable results expected from the intern
The Foundation for Respite Care Services can offer to the interns volunteers a vast range of experiences within the disability field. Being a respite home we cater for clients from birth to 55 year old. Residential stays are organized such that clients are accommodated in one of six groups, each consisting of 15 clients, which rotate through the year. In this way we give each family the opportunity to take a break once every six weeks. Each client’s needs are assessed so that s/he is placed within the group that best fits him/her. The Volunteer will be exposed (obviously under supervision of an experienced Career) to all types of disability. Intellectual and physical disability of all ages. I think the close contact with these persons is the major experience that a volunteer can have. We will expect that the intern will be sensitive and respectful towards our clients and that s/he will be capable to empathize with the clients and their families. Another important thing is to be able to work within a team and to be punctual at work. At Dar il-Kaptan although all of the employees has their job, we are always available to do what in that moment is required for the benefit of the house.

Learning points that the intern might obtain during the internship
We would share our beautiful experience with other people, especially youth, because we firmly believe that the stigma upon the people with disability has to be eradicated by starting giving the opportunity to young people to work with people with special needs.
Additional information a potential candidate may require for the Internship
The Foundation for Respite Care Services, based at Dar il-Kaptan in Mtarfa, was inaugurated in November 1991. The Foundation is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation. The brief residential and day stays offered by the Foundation enable family members to have the much needed respite from the pressures of caring for persons with disabilities. It has been clearly demonstrated that this relief helps the family members to cope better and, in turn, this enables the person with the disability to continue living within the family home and in the community, rather than being institutionalized away from his/her loved ones. Through the various specific programs being offered, thankfully, many lives have been changed for the better.
